Students covered by the Health Plan have access to Gender Affirmation Care, a service that provides two forms of support for students:

Medical coverage: The medical gender-affirming care component is designed to complement the coverage already provided by provincial health insurance. It covers up to $5,000 per procedure (to a lifetime maximum of $10,000) for eligible procedures.

Note that in order to be eligible for these services, you must provide a diagnosis of gender dysphoria from a legally qualified physician (M.D.) or nurse practitioner, and your gender-affirming care medical expenses must not already be covered by provincial health care.

Legal assistance: The legal component connects you with a partner law firm, giving you access to a legal consultation service that includes:

• Guidance on the course of action you may want to consider in your gender-affirming journey
• Legal advice on gender and name changes

Group Number/Prefix: GAP

Member ID: GAP + your student ID number + your 2-digit dependent code = 00 for the member (i.e. the student), 01 for the member’s spouse (21, 31, etc. for subsequent spouses), and 02-20 for dependent children (oldest is 02, second oldest is 03, and so on)

You can submit claims to GreenShield for eligible medical procedures in two ways:

1/ Online: Register for an account at GSC everywhere using your Member ID. Once you’ve logged in, select “Submit A Claim” and then “Other health specialists.” Enter all the details requested and submit your claim.
2/ By mail: Complete a Health Claim Form and mail it to GreenShield, along with receipts for your procedures and diagnosis of gender dysphoria, at this address:

Deadline: All claims must be received by GreenShield no later than 12 months from the date the eligible benefit was incurred.

Legal assistance: To access legal assistance, fill out the online Support Form and select Gender Affirmation Care as the reason for your request. A legal partner will respond to you shortly.
