Seeking legal counsel for conflicts with a landlord, an employer, or a school’s administration can be intimidating and resolving the dispute can be difficult, especially since finding and engaging a lawyer is often a lengthy and costly process.
That’s why we’ve designed a Legal Protection Program for students—the first of its kind in Canada.
As a full-time or part-time Ontario Tech student, you have access to a legal consultation service to consult a duly certified lawyer in your province of study regarding any legal question via a toll-free legal assistance helpline. The Program also includes further counsel should you qualify for legal representation.
Legal expenses arising from a dispute over a housing lease, such as a disputed rent increase, an illegal eviction, or a breach of a condition in the lease.
Legal expenses arising from a dispute with a current or future employment contract, with respect to labour standards for grievances not covered by a union or government agency. This does not include occupational health and safety issues.
A student’s legal expenses in the event of a dispute with an academic institution. This excludes cases related to sexual misconduct or a criminal act.
You also have access to information on any legal situation via a toll-free and convenient legal assistance helpline.
Access to a helpline for any area of law
Comprehensive protection for 3 areas of law
Confidence to pursue action with the full support of a team of legal experts
You’re responsible for verifying if you’re automatically enrolled by checking your tuition statement.
Note: Requests for legal representation deemed frivolous or patently unreasonable, as judged by the partner law firm, may be subject to denial of service.
Frivolous: A request that has no legal basis.
Patently unreasonable: A request for which the legal action sought by the student is disproportionate to the scale of the problem raised.
As of October 12th, 2020, through Studentcare, students who require commissioning services can arrange for virtual meetings to commission affidavits. Notarizing services are also offered.
To benefit from the commissioning and notarizing services, call the toll-free legal assistance helpline (1-833-202-4571) to place a service request, and a meeting will be scheduled with a partner law firm. The services are provided on Wednesdays only, but you can place a request from Monday to Friday during Studentcare’s regular business hours.
Full-year access (from Sept. 1, 2021 - Aug. 31, 2022) is $28, automatically included in your student association-administered fees.
The fee for new winter/spring semester students is $18.67 (for access until Aug. 31, 2022).
You can opt out of the Legal Protection Program during the Change-of-Coverage Period.
Fall semester: Sept. 7 – 30, 2021
